When I told friends and family about my upcoming move to Sydney, Australia, everyone always said one thing: "You have to try the meat pies!". Obviously, meat pies are not a valid food form for me, so I brushed off this suggestion and half-hoped there would be a vegan option available.
A few days after my arrival, my Instagram friend @vegancatman sent me a few vegan restaurants to try in Sydney. Among them was a place called Funky Pies, a small little cafe in Bondi Beach that serves up completely plant-based Aussie pies. After browsing their menu online, I made a beeline for Funky Pies and dragged my friend Selene along with me.
The first time I went (yes, I've been there multiple times in the week I've been in Sydney), I tried their Butter-ish Chicken pie. Ooooh my, it was so dang delicious!! The crust is flaky, warm, and soft, and when sliced open with a fork, it gives way to creamy vegan chicken pieces, tender bites of pumpkin, and an aromatic, flavorful sauce made with tandoori spices. It was delicious! Definitely my favorite pie I've had. The next time I went, I tried the No Wurry Curry pie. Chickpeas, lentils, and a savory coconut curry are stuffed inside their perfect pie crust. I also ordered the mashed potatoes, peas, and gravy, making it a very satisfying and yummy meal.
While Funky Pies is known for their personal-sized plant-based pies, don't be fooled. Their desserts are equally delicious. During my first visit, I ordered the caramel slice to-go. They handed it to me in a paper bag and I expected to save it for later. However, after one look at the gooey, caramel deliciousness, I had no choice but to wolf it down right there. It was sooo good! It was sweet, chewy, and creamy with a coconutty flavor to it. I've craved it every single day since I've been in Sydney.
Located just steps from the beach, Funky Pies is a mecca of awesome vegan food. If you want to try typical Aussie cuisine but prefer to keep things cruelty-free, pay this little cafe a visit. You won't be disappointed.
