Build your own pizza places have been showing up on every corner in every major city (hi Blaze, Pizza Rev, Pieology, etc. etc. etc.) and I'm totally not complaining. Pizza is definitely one of those foods that everyone universally loves (yes, even vegans!) but finding a really good one can be a tough feat.
I've been to my fair share of BYOP (build your own pizza lol!) parlors and while they're all good, they're nothing special. In fact, most seem to follow the some type of crispy thin crust, typical tomato sauce, with an assortment of veggies to add on top. Up until recently, I had yet to be blown away by any of these customizable pie shops.
Urban Pi opened up at a shopping center just minutes from my house in San Diego and my mom has been begging me to try it. I've always kind of brushed it off thinking it was another replica of Blaze or Pizza Rev. Considering I've never been totally impressed with any of these places, I was pretty unmotivated to try Urban Pi.
Finally, I gave it a try and hollllyyy $#!% this place is awesome. Like the other personal pizza places around the world, Urban Pi offers the typical veg toppings: tomato, zucchini, bell peppers, mushrooms, onions, and olives. But, if you want to get all fancy with it, which DUH of course I do, they have corn, shaved carrots, roasted Brussels sprouts, sauteed broccolini, and Daiya Mozzarella! I loaded up my pizza with all the toppings and was really excited to give it a try.
The thing that separates Urban Pi from the other BYOP shops isn't their cool assortment of veggies....it's their crust. It's thicker than Blaze's and Pizza Rev's, with a crispy bottom and soft, doughy top. The crust is chewy and substantial and there are no corners or edges that are burnt to a cracker like crisp.
Topped with veggies, vegan cheese, tomato sauce, and a drizzle of BBQ sauce, Urban Pi delivered a really good pizza perfected to my tastes. I will certainly be going back.
