I visited Portland, Oregon in October of 2014 and STILL dream about Homegrown Smoker. I'm a sucker for any restaurant that takes typically meat-heavy dishes and recreates them using plant-based ingredients. Homegrown Smoker does just that, and they do it so well.
In true Portland-style, Homegrown Smoker functions inside a tiny food truck that is stationed in a little lot off of Skidmore Avenue. This unassuming mobile restaurant serves up some of the best tasting vegan BBQ I've ever had! There were so many delicious options to choose from--anything from mac n' cheese stuffed burritos to BBQ ham sandwiches. I wanted to get a little taste of everything so I opted for their Combo Platter: two meats, two sides, and their jalapeno hush puppies. This was probably the best decision I've ever made!
At the recommendation of the friendly guy working the window, I ordered the BBQ "ribs", the smoked soy curls, a hefty serving of mac n' cheese, and some good old fashioned fries. DAMN was it amazing!! Everything I tried had so much flavor--smoky spicy BBQ, creamy chipotle ranch, smooth velvety mac n' cheese...my mouth is watering just thinking about it! My non-vegan friends even had a couple bites and couldn't believe how delicious it was. The best part? They didn't even miss the meat! I can't wait to go back to Portland to try one of their towering burgers or football-sized burritos. I have a feeling everything at Homegrown Smoker is phenomenal.
At $14, the combo platter was definitely not a super cheap meal. Luckily, the portions were gigantic and I had enough left over to eat for dinner later. If you're ever passing through PDX, Homegrown Smoker is one of those spots you simply can't miss.
