Champs Diner is your typical vegan joint. Before I proceed, can we take a moment to appreciate that I can call a restaurant a "typical vegan joint"? Ten years ago, that wouldn't have made any sense. Now, (I think) you guys know what I mean.
Walking into this Williamsburg eatery is like stepping into a time-capsule. They totally did up the place to look like a hip 50s diner, complete with shiny vinyl booths, black and white checkered floors, and a counter with bar stools. I'm a sucker for diners, so I was immediately drawn into Champs.
We went to Champs Diner for brunch and were so impressed with their huge plant-based menu. They had things like stuffed French Toast, Grand Slams (a la Denny's), and breakfast burritos. We opted for their breakfast enchiladas (scrambled tofu, Field Roast sausage, and Daiya cheese in a corn tortilla, smothered in spicy red sauce, cashew cream, and guacamole) and their Vegan Benedict. Both were tasty although nothing too outstanding. I love ordering Benedicts at restaurants because they are normally so egg/dairy/meat heavy and it's awesome to see chefs recreate it using cruelty-free ingredients! Champs does a good job on their plant-based Benedict. If you order coffee, ask for oat milk on the side. I had never had it before but it's so good and creamy--better than almond milk (and I'm a die hard almond milk fan)!
Champs Diner certainly has good food, but it's nothing super special. If you're looking for a solid vegan breakfast spot, Champs is your place. If you want something a bit more trendy, unique, and refined, I'd suggest checking another eatery out. Prices are reasonable and portions are adequate!
